  • Does a sharp fall in Taiwan’s stock market mean that the long-term outlook for AI and semiconductor companies has weakened?

  • How can investors approach a market in which interest rates, policy uncertainty, and differences between companies are all contributing to volatility?

Main Topic

Market Shock and Stabilization Measures

Taiwan’s stock market experienced extreme volatility on the 6th, following a steep decline in U.S. equities and uncertainty about policy after the U.S. midterm elections. The market surged by more than 2,000 points during the session as stabilizing funds entered, but it eventually closed down 1,873.08 points and fell below the 40,000-point level. The sharp intraday reversal illustrated how quickly sentiment can shift when investors are responding to policy concerns, valuation changes, and market positioning at the same time.

Allianz Global Investors Taiwan said the correction was primarily driven by valuation adjustments and a settling of market positions and capital, rather than by a fundamental reversal in the long-term AI trend or in Taiwanese companies’ earnings momentum. This distinction matters: a stock-price decline can reflect changing expectations and investor flows even when the underlying demand for products and services has not materially changed.

Authorities also announced measures intended to calm trading conditions. Taiwan’s National Stabilization Fund decided to enter the market. Since its establishment in 2000, its total resources have remained at 500 billion New Taiwan dollars, and this was its tenth market intervention. The previous intervention was on April 9, 2025, after Donald Trump announced reciprocal tariffs.

In addition, Taiwan’s Financial Supervisory Commission said that short-selling restrictions would take effect from the 9th. Measures include lowering the daily intraday limit on securities-lending sell orders and raising the margin requirement for short sales. The commission also plans to expand the channels through which investors can provide additional collateral. Taken together, these actions are intended to limit extreme short-selling activity and support orderly market functioning.

Such stabilization measures can influence short-term trading and liquidity, but they do not remove the economic and policy uncertainties behind market volatility. Investors therefore still need to assess company fundamentals, earnings visibility, valuations, and risk tolerance rather than treating official intervention as a guarantee of a market rebound.

AI Investment and the Long-Term Outlook

Hui-Chung Hsiao, manager of the Allianz Taiwan High Dividend and Allianz Taiwan Technology Funds, said concerns after the U.S. midterm elections included the possibility that Democrats could strengthen oversight of AI and data centers. Those concerns contributed to sharp corrections in the Nasdaq and Philadelphia Semiconductor Index, which in turn helped trigger a wave of selling across Asian markets.

However, Hsiao noted that the principal challenge currently facing data-center construction is rising cost, rather than a slowdown in investment. Supply chains also remain tight, which limits the immediate practical impact on related businesses. Cost pressures may affect project economics and the pace of deployment, but they do not, by themselves, establish that demand for AI infrastructure has disappeared.

Hsiao described the latest decline as a combination of policy uncertainty, valuation adjustment, and a settling of market positions. AI-related suppliers have faced short-term valuation pressure, but she said their fundamentals and medium- to long-term earnings momentum remain unchanged. In her assessment, Taiwan’s corporate earnings growth momentum for 2027 remains strong.

Once market positions have had time to settle, Hsiao continues to favor leading companies and businesses with strong earnings visibility in semiconductors, IP and ASIC, advanced packaging, AI-server components, and optical communications. These industries are connected to the construction and operation of advanced computing infrastructure, though their prospects are not identical. Company-level execution, customer demand, costs, and competitive position can all affect results.

The central distinction is between short-term market repricing and a lasting change in business fundamentals: analysts cited in the report view the recent correction mainly as the former, while continuing to monitor earnings and investment conditions. That view is not a promise that prices will quickly recover. Rather, it suggests that investors should evaluate whether companies’ long-term revenue and profit drivers remain credible despite near-term volatility.

Portfolio Strategy in a Divided Market

Liao Pen-Lung, manager of the Allianz Taiwan High Dividend Growth Active ETF (00984A-TW), said that high valuations are likely to make performance differences between individual stocks and industries more pronounced. When valuations are elevated, investors may be less willing to overlook weaker earnings visibility or disappointing results. As a result, broad market advances may give way to more selective performance, with companies judged increasingly on their own fundamentals.

Liao said the team currently has financial holding companies as its largest allocation. This is intended to increase diversification and help the portfolio respond to changes in market leadership. Its growth holdings, meanwhile, include parts of the technology chain such as wafer foundries, advanced packaging, and thermal management. The approach combines exposure to growth areas with holdings from other sectors rather than depending exclusively on a single theme.

Chin-Fu Kuo, manager of the Allianz Taiwan Active ETF (00993A-TW), added that Federal Reserve interest-rate policy, U.S. Treasury yields, and geopolitical developments remain important variables for markets. Changes in interest-rate expectations can influence financing costs and the valuation investors assign to future earnings. Geopolitical events can also affect supply chains, trade conditions, and business confidence.

In an environment characterized by high interest rates, high valuations, and high volatility, Kuo said corporate earnings visibility will be a key test. The market may shift from broad-based gains to greater divergence among individual stocks. In that setting, a multi-strategy allocation can help investors pursue structural growth opportunities while managing exposure to uncertainties and sector-specific risks.

Multi-strategy allocation does not mean that every investor should hold the same mix of securities. It means considering how different holdings may respond to varying economic conditions and market cycles. A portfolio focused on technology leaders, semiconductors, and the AI supply chain may offer exposure to long-term growth drivers, while allocations to financials and other areas may provide a broader set of return sources. The appropriate balance depends on each investor’s objectives, time horizon, and ability to tolerate losses.

The analysts’ comments therefore point to selectivity rather than indiscriminate optimism. Investors may wish to distinguish companies with durable demand and clearer earnings prospects from those whose valuations depend more heavily on uncertain future expectations. They should also consider that high-quality businesses can still experience sharp share-price declines when market sentiment deteriorates or valuations are reset.

AI and earnings outlook Analysts said AI supply-chain fundamentals and medium- to long-term earnings momentum remain intact, with Taiwan’s 2027 corporate earnings growth momentum still viewed as strong.
Areas of interest Highlighted industries include semiconductors, IP and ASIC, advanced packaging, AI-server components, and optical communications.
Portfolio approach A diversified, multi-strategy allocation can combine technology growth exposure with financial holdings and emphasize companies with stronger earnings visibility.
Ongoing uncertainties Federal Reserve policy, U.S. Treasury yields, geopolitical developments, costs, and company-level earnings remain important considerations.

Afterwards...

Looking ahead, investors and policymakers will need clearer ways to distinguish temporary market dislocations from changes in the underlying pace of technological investment. Further research into data-center construction costs, power availability, semiconductor capacity, supply-chain resilience, and the commercial returns on AI deployment could help provide a more grounded view of the sector’s prospects.

Investors may also benefit from deeper analysis of how interest rates and government policy affect companies at different points in the AI supply chain. A technology provider, a semiconductor manufacturer, a data-center operator, and a financial company can respond differently to the same macroeconomic shock. Better tools for comparing earnings quality, valuation assumptions, and balance-sheet strength may help investors make more informed decisions in markets where performance is increasingly differentiated.

For the broader market, a durable approach will require attention to both innovation and risk management. Structural demand for AI-related infrastructure may remain an important growth theme, but it should be assessed alongside cost pressures, regulation, geopolitical risk, and the possibility that expected returns are already reflected in valuations. Continued exploration of transparent investment research, resilient supply chains, and responsible AI deployment can help clarify which opportunities are sustainable over time.
