ASE Technology Reports 28% Quarterly Profit Growth as Third-Quarter EPS Reaches NT$6.13

Highlights

ASE Technology Holding (日月光投控, 3711-TW) reported third-quarter after-tax net income of NT$26.996 billion, up 28% quarter over quarter and 148% year over year, with earnings per share of NT$6.13. Revenue reached NT$244.16 billion. Semiconductor assembly and testing benefited from full advanced-packaging capacity and a stronger high-end product mix, lifting its gross margin to 30.6%. The company’s finance chief said this margin level has broken through a structural ceiling and could become a new operating baseline. EMS revenue also increased, although its margin declined amid higher component costs associated with AI infrastructure investment.

The central development is the semiconductor assembly and testing business’s 30.6% gross margin, which management views as a potential new baseline rather than a temporary peak.

Sentiment Analysis

  • The article’s overall tone is positive, led by strong third-quarter profit growth, higher revenue, and improved operating results. Net income rose both sequentially and annually, while EPS reached NT$6.13.
  • Semiconductor assembly and testing is the most favorable part of the report. Its revenue, gross margin, and operating income all increased, supported by advanced packaging capacity utilization and a higher-end product mix. Management’s view that the business has exceeded a 30% structural margin ceiling adds a cautiously optimistic outlook.
  • The outlook is supported by demand from high-performance computing, automotive and industrial applications, and AI-related chips. However, the article does not describe these drivers as guarantees of future performance.
  • EMS results are mixed: revenue and operating income grew, but gross margin fell from the previous quarter and year. Higher component costs connected with AI infrastructure investment and cost pass-through effects are cited as pressures.
  • Overall, the sentiment is strongly positive on profitability and packaging operations, tempered by cost pressure in EMS. The bar below represents this positive tone while recognizing the stated caveat.

ASE Technology Holding (日月光投控, 3711-TW) held an investor conference and announced its third-quarter financial results on the 29th. The company reported after-tax net income of NT$26.996 billion, a 28% increase from the previous quarter and a 148% increase from the same period a year earlier. Earnings per share were NT$6.13. For the first three quarters combined, after-tax net income reached NT$62.19 billion, up 139.7% year over year, while earnings per share totaled NT$14.17.

Third-quarter revenue was NT$244.16 billion, up 27.8% sequentially and 44.8% year over year. Gross margin was 22.1%, increasing 1.1 percentage points from the previous quarter and 5.0 percentage points from a year earlier. Operating income reached NT$33.14 billion, up 56.8% sequentially and 151.1% year over year. Operating margin was 13.6%, an increase of 2.5 percentage points quarter over quarter and 5.8 percentage points year over year.

Across the first three quarters, revenue totaled NT$608.89 billion, an increase of 30.3% year over year. Gross margin was 21.2%, up 4.2 percentage points from the corresponding period. Operating income reached NT$71.77 billion, rising 117.0%, while operating margin was 11.8%, up 4.7 percentage points.

The semiconductor assembly and testing business, referred to as ATM, generated third-quarter revenue of NT$151.485 billion. This represented growth of 20.1% sequentially and 51% year over year. The business benefited from full capacity utilization in advanced packaging, including LEAP, and from a greater contribution from higher-end products. Its gross margin reached 30.6%, rising 3.3 percentage points quarter over quarter and 8 percentage points year over year. Operating income was NT$30.243 billion, up 53% sequentially and 178% year over year.

Chief Financial Officer Dong Hung-ssu (董宏思) said that growth in advanced packaging and testing, together with an improved product mix, had allowed the assembly and testing business to move beyond what he described as a structural gross-margin ceiling of 30%. He said this level would become a new operating baseline. The statement signals management’s view that the margin improvement reflects changes in business structure and product composition, rather than only a short-term fluctuation.

Demand factors mentioned by the company include advanced packaging for high-performance computing, recovery in automotive and industrial applications, and demand for chips used in AI-related products. The company also provided details of the assembly and testing business’s sales mix. By application, communications accounted for 38% of revenue and computers for 34%; automotive, consumer electronics, and other applications together made up 28%. By product category, Bumping, Flip Chip, WLP & SiP accounted for 51%, wire-bond packaging for 24%, testing for 17%, materials for 2%, and other products for 6%. The ten largest customers represented approximately 63% of total semiconductor assembly and testing revenue.

Electronics manufacturing services (EMS) revenue in the third quarter was NT$93.469 billion, up 42% sequentially and 35% year over year. Gross margin was 8.3%, down 0.6 percentage points from the previous quarter and 0.9 percentage points from a year earlier. Operating income was NT$3.111 billion, up 98% sequentially and 22% year over year. Demand for system-in-package (SiP) products remained steady. The company attributed the margin decline primarily to higher component costs associated with the AI infrastructure build-out and the effects of passing those costs through.

In summary, the results show broad growth in revenue and profit, with particularly strong performance in semiconductor assembly and testing. The business’s margin expansion stands out, while the EMS figures illustrate how increased sales can coexist with margin pressure when input costs rise. The company’s remarks identify several areas of demand but do not quantify how much each will contribute to future results.
