  • Does the rebound signal a durable trend, or should investors remain alert to short-term risks?

Market rebound and key drivers

Taiwan’s equity market extended its recovery on Wednesday as global technology shares strengthened and investor appetite for risk improved. The weighted index opened higher, advanced through the session, and closed up 939.35 points at 47035.58. Turnover reached 7221.36 billion. The advance pushed the benchmark back above 47K and reflected broad buying across technology-related shares.

Institutional investors were net buyers. Foreign investors purchased a net 159.22 billion, investment trusts bought a net 118.07 billion, and securities dealers bought a net 21.65 billion. Their combined net buying was 298.94 billion. Foreign investors and securities dealers shifted from selling to buying, while investment trusts extended their buying streak to twelve consecutive sessions, with cumulative net purchases of 1904.6 billion.

Leverage also eased during the pullback and recovery period. Margin balances on the listed market fell by a combined 210 billion over two consecutive sessions, while the over-the-counter market’s balances declined by 67.1 billion. The combined listed and over-the-counter reduction was 277.1 billion over two sessions. Lower margin balances can reduce near-term leverage pressure and allow market positions to settle, although they do not by themselves guarantee further gains.

International markets provided a supportive backdrop. Renewed enthusiasm for artificial intelligence investment and a retreat in international oil prices improved risk sentiment. All four major U.S. indexes closed higher on Tuesday, while the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index gained 3.60%, helping lead technology shares. Reports that AI startup Anthropic had submitted an initial public offering application also revived discussion of the AI sector’s growth prospects and capital spending.

Semiconductor stocks advanced, including Broadcom (AVGO-US), up about 4%, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD-US), up 5.45%, and NVIDIA (NVDA-US), up 0.90%. Applied Materials (AMAT-US) and Qualcomm (QCOM-US) also closed higher. Memory shares were particularly strong: Western Digital (WDC-US) rose 6.95%, while Micron Technology (MU-US), SanDisk (SNDK-US), and Seagate Technology (STX-US) also gained. These moves reflected continued attention to storage demand associated with AI server expansion.

Investors are looking across the AI supply chain, including AI chips, advanced manufacturing processes, application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs), thermal management, printed circuit boards (PCBs), and high-speed data transmission. These themes may support longer-term expectations for Taiwan’s technology suppliers. However, a popular industry theme is not a substitute for company-level analysis: investors still need to assess order visibility, revenue growth, margins, and whether capital spending is generating returns.

Among major Taiwanese companies, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (2330-TW) rose 1.04% to close at 2425. Demand for AI chips continues to increase, and its CoWoS advanced-packaging prices are reportedly being considered for increases of 1 to 2 tenths. Some equipment delivery times have extended to 6 to 8 months, pointing to pressure on suppliers as capacity is expanded. Demand from AI GPUs, server CPUs, and customized ASICs, as well as the complexity of integrating high-bandwidth memory, is tightening packaging and testing capacity.

TSMC is continuing its advanced-packaging investments. Analysts estimate monthly capacity could move toward more than 13 ten-thousand wafers in 2026, with a target of 20 ten-thousand in 2027. Expansion plans include facilities in Chiayi and Tainan, alongside longer-term plans for a new U.S. facility. Equipment and component suppliers may benefit from this expansion, though the scale and timing of any benefit will depend on actual project execution and customer demand.

Hon Hai Precision Industry (2317-TW), also known as Foxconn, gained 1.62% to close at 251.5. The company is deepening its AI smart-manufacturing work with NVIDIA, using the Blackwell architecture and DGX supercomputing platform. It reported that training a 1,200-billion-parameter model became 2.48 times faster than before, while supporting the development of its FoxBrain model. AI applications have been deployed across more than 200 facilities worldwide. Production scheduling hours reportedly fell 25%, injection-molding engineering workload declined 50%, and the improvement rate for SMT production-line abnormalities exceeded 90%. Foxconn is also combining digital twins, robotics, and AI agents to upgrade automation and manufacturing operations.

MediaTek (2454-TW) rose 6.94% to close at 4235. It is scheduled to hold an investor conference on the 30th. Citigroup estimates fourth-quarter revenue could increase 30% quarter over quarter to 2,169 hundred million. Its AI ASIC business is forecast to contribute more than 20 hundred million U.S. dollars in 2026. MediaTek is pursuing the TPU v10 project, expected to enter mass production in 2029, using CoWoS or CoPoS packaging. Order visibility is described as extending beyond 2029. Citigroup’s projected EPS for 2026 through 2028 is 74.94, 167.76, and 282.47, respectively, and it assigned a target price of 6,800. Actual ASIC shipments and profitability remain important items to monitor.

Several smaller and mid-sized companies are positioned in distinct parts of the AI ecosystem. Leadtek Research (2465-TW) serves AI workstation and server demand; Tongtai Machine & Tool (4526-TW) is targeting AI server boards, IC substrates, and advanced-process equipment; and Genius Electronic Optical (3406-TW) is developing high-end optical components and co-packaged optics (CPO) opportunities. Their business exposures differ, so the growth potential of one company should not be assumed to apply equally to the others.

Leadtek is described as benefiting from NVIDIA AI product demand and is the exclusive Taiwanese agent for the RTX Pro 5500 workstation graphics card. The product was expected to enter mass production and launch, with demand reported in China before shipments began. China represents more than 60% of the company’s business. Revenue for the first three quarters was 73.9 hundred million, more than double year over year, and first-half EPS was 2.79. Third-quarter revenue reached a record 33.15 hundred million. Demand for the RTX Pro 6000 series and DGX Spark, along with higher product prices, may support fourth-quarter operations, but the outcome depends on realized sales and margins.

Tongtai exhibited a high-precision CCD drilling machine and an AMR unmanned solution at TPCA Show 2026. Its systems are aimed at AI server boards and IC substrates and combine automatic tool changing, board loading and unloading, and tool-storage management. The company has entered supply chains serving leading board manufacturers in Taiwan, China, and Korea. Its order visibility is said to extend to the end of 2027, and current capacity is fully utilized as it optimizes production lines and considers expansion. These indicators point to potential demand, while delivery execution and capacity additions remain relevant factors.

Genius Electronic Optical reported September revenue of 26.72 hundred million, up 0.54% year over year, and after-tax net income of 4.34 hundred million, down 15% year over year. EPS was 3.85. Third-quarter revenue was 78.12 hundred million, up 37.55% quarter over quarter, and EPS reached 9.69. Revenue for the first three quarters totaled 196.31 hundred million, up 10.21% year over year. Fourth-quarter performance will depend in part on sales of customers’ new devices and progress in product certification. The company is also working with 3M; 3M is expected to invest 48.12 hundred million to subscribe for private-placement shares, representing approximately 4.68% ownership. The partners intend to advance beam-expander optical technology and explore CPO opportunities for AI servers.

AUO (2409-TW) was another notable name. Its second-quarter operations improved, with revenue of 708.91 hundred million, up 2.7% quarter over quarter and 2.4% year over year. Gross margin rose to 13%, and after-tax net income was 13.4 hundred million, marking a return to profitability. September revenue was 234.04 hundred million, up 1.3% month over month, while cumulative revenue for the first nine months reached 2,067.98 hundred million.

Beyond conventional display operations, AUO is pursuing smart mobility, specialized vertical applications, and AI infrastructure. It is also exploring higher-value areas such as Micro LED optical communications, glass-core substrates, and advanced packaging, aiming to reduce reliance on the display cycle. Its third-quarter investor conference is scheduled for October 29. Investors are expected to focus on quarterly earnings, fourth-quarter panel prices, and the timing and contribution of newer businesses.

On October 28, the reported high-volume gainers on the Taiwan Stock Exchange included Chingis Technology (2444-TW), UDE (4977-TW), Chenfull Precision (2355-TW), Kinsus Interconnect Technology (3189-TW), Kuang-Ding (6226-TW), Elite Semiconductor Memory Technology (3006-TW), Tongtai Machine & Tool (4526-TW), GUC (3443-TW), Taita Chemical (4927-TW), CMC Magnetics (4960-TW), ACON (3605-TW), Dadi Control (3701-TW), Kuan Hsi Electric (2466-TW), Ji Xiang Quan (2491-TW), Andes Technology (6533-TW), and Faraday Technology (3035-TW).

The reported high-volume gainers on the over-the-counter market on October 28 included King Yuan Electronics probe-related name Zhong Tan Zhen (6217-TW), Yung Sheng (6418-TW), WIN Semiconductors (3105-TW), ADATA Technology (3260-TW), You Ji (3455-TW), Chuan Bao (1595-TW), Da-Li (4716-TW), Ledlink Optics (5230-TW), Wah Hong Industrial (8240-TW), Broadwell (3581-TW), FOCI Fiber Optic Communications (1815-TW), Tsang Yow Industrial (6538-TW), Feng Ching (2061-TW), eLAND Information (6925-TW), Da Jia (2221-TW), and Yung Chi Paint & Varnish (4714-TW). A list of strong performers identifies active stocks; it should not be interpreted as a recommendation or a prediction of future returns.

Despite the rebound, several uncertainties remain. International oil prices, upcoming results from Alphabet (GOOGL-US), Microsoft (MSFT-US), and Amazon (AMZN-US), and Federal Reserve interest-rate decisions could affect global markets. Investors may prefer a company-by-company approach over broad market calls, emphasizing stable financial results, visible orders, and exposure to durable industry trends. AI semiconductors, memory, thermal management, high-speed transmission, and display companies with CPO-related transformation plans are areas to follow, but valuation and execution risks remain.

The rally supports a constructive view of AI-linked demand, but market momentum alone does not establish that every related stock will benefit. Memory supply and demand is a key theme, particularly demand for high-bandwidth memory, DRAM, and enterprise storage in AI servers. Pricing, capacity allocation, and profitability at individual suppliers will shape how the group is valued. Anthropic’s reported IPO filing has also renewed attention to AI commercialization, spanning chip design, advanced packaging, high-speed interconnects, and cybersecurity services.

The return above 47K highlights the influence of global technology sentiment and AI investment expectations on Taiwan equities. The next stage will depend less on broad enthusiasm alone and more on evidence: orders converting into revenue, capacity additions being completed, margins holding up, and new products finding customers. Investors and analysts will need to distinguish between firms with measurable commercial progress and those whose connection to AI remains primarily thematic.

Further exploration of advanced packaging, high-bandwidth memory, energy-efficient computing, optical interconnects, and factory automation could clarify how AI infrastructure is evolving. Better reporting on power use, supply-chain bottlenecks, capital returns, and the lifecycle of data-center equipment would also improve assessments of the sector’s long-term effects. These technologies may create meaningful opportunities, but their development will involve financial, environmental, and operational trade-offs.

Market participants should continue to track earnings, order visibility, pricing, and balance-sheet strength alongside macroeconomic developments. A disciplined evaluation of both growth potential and downside risk is essential when fast-moving themes influence prices.
