  • Despite the market decline, what signs point to improving conditions in technology shares and selected industries?

Main Topic

On October 21, China’s A-share market rose early before turning lower. The ChiNext Index had gained nearly 1% at one point, but finished down 1.62%. The Shanghai Composite Index fell 0.6%, while the Shenzhen Component Index declined 0.82%. More than 3,300 stocks fell across the market. Turnover on the Shanghai and Shenzhen exchanges reached 1.43 trillion yuan, down 26.8 billion yuan from the previous trading day.

Market performance was mixed beneath the headline declines. Data-element stocks strengthened against the broader trend, and the AI animated-drama theme saw repeated gains. Battery-industry shares, by contrast, weakened. Among broad-market exchange-traded funds (ETFs), E Fund ChiNext ETF (159915) recorded a marked increase in trading late in the session, with turnover exceeding 10 billion yuan.

The ChiNext Index’s fall below the 2,700-point level drew attention, but the index’s weakness was concentrated in part in a single major constituent. CATL (宁德时代), the largest constituent of the ChiNext Index and the third-largest constituent of the CSI 300 Index, fell 12.03%. This was its second-largest single-day decline since listing, behind the 14.72% fall recorded on October 9, 2024.

CATL traded 32.171 billion yuan worth of shares, the highest turnover among all stocks that day, compared with 15.252 billion yuan in the previous session. According to Wind, the stock’s contribution to the index decline was large enough to outweigh the combined impact of hundreds of declining ChiNext constituents. The weakness in solid-state battery shares was particularly pronounced, and that pressure spread to the ChiNext Index and the wider market.

The immediate catalyst cited in market discussion was concern that CATL’s third-quarter net profit had fallen short of expectations. A report around midday said that, responding to investor worries about industry demand next year, the company stated that demand in 2027 remained promising and was not as pessimistic as some market expectations suggested. The market commentary behind this report did not attempt to resolve the disagreement about future demand; instead, it emphasized that the broad market was showing some subtle signs of improvement.

One such sign was a gradual recovery in parts of the technology sector since Monday. Several previously popular stocks with strong market recognition—including Hengtong Optic-Electric (亨通光电), D-Memory (德明利), Dapu Microelectronics (大普微), and Unitree Robotics (宇树科技)—rose sharply on increased trading from relatively low levels that day. After price action on Tuesday and Wednesday, their overall market response remained relatively positive. Their stabilization and rebound also helped lift related sectors.

ETF performance provided another way to observe that recovery. Communication, ChiNext computing-power, and robotics ETFs all experienced intraday rises followed by pullbacks, but their direction over the week was described as more constructive. This pattern does not establish that a durable market reversal has begun; it indicates that some technology-related areas were no longer moving uniformly lower.

ETF flows were also worth noting. During the week to date, funds continued to flow into broad-market ETFs, although the pace and scale differed from earlier periods. Late on October 21, four products saw modest increases in trading volume: E Fund ChiNext ETF (159915), Harvest CSI 300 ETF (510300), Harvest CSI 300 ETF (159919), and ICBC Credit Suisse STAR 50 ETF (588050). Their closing turnover was 10.41 billion yuan, 5.943 billion yuan, 1.890 billion yuan, and 545 million yuan, respectively.

Outside the CSI 300 and ChiNext indexes, which were more exposed to CATL’s decline, many major indexes had stopped setting new lows for two consecutive sessions after recovering from a low on Monday. Some had even moved above their five-day moving average, partly because the moving average itself had fallen. This is a limited technical improvement, rather than conclusive evidence that the market has reached a lasting bottom.

A research report from Datong Securities said that third-quarter earnings releases were approaching and that expectations for many technology companies’ results were improving. It also noted recent net subscriptions into ETFs, arguing that positive factors were accumulating. The report cautioned, however, that market sentiment was exerting a substantial influence and that short-term volatility remained high, even as long-term funds appeared to be providing support. In its view, it was too early to call a short-term reversal, and investors would need to wait for a bottom to form.

The report suggested maintaining a defensive allocation to dividend-paying stocks during periods of volatility. Over the medium to long term, it pointed to technology as an area to watch, while suggesting that investors could consider entry after the market stabilizes. These views describe a cautious framework, not a guarantee of future performance.

Several sectors beyond communications equipment, communications services, and semiconductors—often described as the “optics” and “chips” themes—also led gains on October 21. Their drivers included developments in agriculture, AI-generated entertainment, on-device AI, and memory chips.

Animal Husbandry

Data from China’s National Bureau of Statistics showed that the country had 36.02 million breeding sows at the end of the third quarter of 2026. That was 1.78 million, or 4.7%, fewer than in the second quarter of 2026. Pig stocks fell 2.6% year over year, marking the first year-over-year decline since 2025.

Market institutions attributed the reduction partly to weak seasonal pig prices in the third quarter, which contributed to sustained and deep losses for producers and accelerated market-driven capacity cuts. Policy guidance encouraging leading pig producers to cull more breeding sows was another factor. With sow capacity reduction entering a deeper phase, continued losses could intensify cash-flow pressure and lead to further significant reductions over the next two quarters. Analysts said substantial culling could increase the potential strength of a possible reversal in the pig cycle next year, although the timing and scale remain uncertain.

Culture and Media: AI Animated Dramas

Volcano Engine launched an incentive program for high-quality AI dramas. It is aimed at premium AI animated short dramas made using Seedance and released on the Hongguo Short Drama app. Eligible AI productions, including animated dramas and AI-generated live-action-style dramas, may qualify if they rank in the monthly top 50 by Hongguo popularity score and pass review. Each selected production may receive an incentive of up to 200,000 yuan.

On-Device AI

Counterpoint projected that generative-AI phones would account for 52% of the global market in 2027. Under this outlook, on-device AI could shift from a premium feature to a standard factory-installed capability. Gartner data indicated that AI PCs would rise from 15.6% of shipments in 2024 to approximately 54.7% in 2026, and that AI PCs could become commonplace by 2029.

Memory Chips

Reports on semiconductor companies that had disclosed third-quarter results or preliminary results for the first three quarters indicated broad year-over-year earnings growth across the sector. The reports described this as evidence that strong industry conditions were continuing. Memory-chip companies, in particular, were reported to be demonstrating considerable profitability.

The central distinction is between a sharp index-level shock driven by a heavily weighted stock and the broader, more mixed signals beneath the surface. CATL’s fall significantly affected the ChiNext and CSI 300 indexes, while continuing ETF activity, stabilization among some technology names, and strength in selected industries offered reasons to assess the session beyond its headline losses.

Afterwards...

The session illustrates why market analysis benefits from looking beyond the headline index move. A large decline in a heavily weighted company can dominate benchmark performance even when some sectors are stabilizing or attracting new interest. At the same time, ETF activity and short-term technical signals should be interpreted carefully: they can provide useful context, but they do not independently confirm a durable market bottom.

Several areas merit further observation. Investors and researchers can track how company earnings compare with expectations, whether ETF flows persist, and whether technology-sector rebounds broaden beyond a small number of stocks. In agriculture, breeding-sow inventories, producer cash flows, and subsequent changes in capacity may help clarify the possible course of the pig cycle. In AI, the commercial viability of generated entertainment and the adoption of on-device systems will depend not only on forecasts, but also on product quality, costs, consumer use, and infrastructure.

Further work on semiconductor supply and demand, especially memory-chip profitability, could also help distinguish short-lived earnings strength from a more sustained industry recovery. More generally, combining company-level fundamentals with index composition, trading flows, and sector data can provide a fuller picture of volatile markets. The most useful next step is to test whether today’s signs of stabilization persist across multiple sessions and across a broader set of companies.
