Evergreen Sees Peak Season Demand Extending Into Q4

Highlights

Evergreen Marine (長榮, 2603-TW) reported September consolidated revenue of NT$49.711 billion, up 1.48% month over month and 65.04% year over year, reaching its highest level since September 2024. General Manager Wu Kuang-hui said September revenue exceeded expectations as freight rates remained elevated. The company said the peak season had not ended by late September and that delayed shipments were supporting fourth-quarter prospects. AI-related demand is contributing to cargo volumes, and bookings through November appear strong. Evergreen expects the fourth quarter to grow year over year, while noting that structural factors could support a constructive longer-term outlook.

Sentiment Analysis

  • Overall tone — positive: The remarks emphasize elevated freight rates, revenue growth, strong bookings through November, and confidence in fourth-quarter performance. September revenue exceeded the company’s prior expectation, and management described demand in the U.S. market as relatively optimistic.

  • Demand outlook: AI-related cargo demand, activity on north-south and regional routes, and shipments delayed from the peak season are presented as sources of support. Evergreen also expects a pre-Lunar New Year restocking period after the traditional November lull.

  • Cautionary context: The company acknowledges a continued oversupply structure heading into next year. Port congestion and climate-related disruptions are described as structural considerations, while vessel availability remains difficult despite active charter markets.

  • Assessment: The article is optimistic about near-term business conditions but stops short of suggesting that risks have disappeared. Its positive outlook is conditional on demand, freight rates, and capacity constraints remaining supportive.

Article Text

Evergreen Marine held an investor conference on the 8th and announced consolidated revenue of NT$49.711 billion for September. Revenue rose 1.48% from the previous month and 65.04% from a year earlier, reaching its highest level since September 2024. General Manager Wu Kuang-hui said the company had expected August to be its revenue peak for the year, but September came in higher than anticipated. He attributed the result primarily to freight rates remaining elevated.

Wu said that, after entering the fourth quarter, there was at least no reason to take a pessimistic view of the U.S. route before the Lunar New Year next year. His comments reflected the company’s assessment of current market conditions rather than a guarantee of future results. The company described continued rate strength as an important factor behind its recent revenue performance.

Evergreen said this year’s peak season began earlier than usual, but activity had not finished even by the end of September. It also reported a delayed-shipment effect, with cargo demand extending beyond the period when seasonal strength might ordinarily have eased. As a result, the company expressed a substantially positive view of the fourth quarter. It said north-south routes were holding up well and nearby regional routes were also performing well.

The company pointed to a traditional seasonal lull in November, followed by another period of cargo loading ahead of the Lunar New Year. Its outlook therefore includes both the possibility of a quieter interval and the prospect of renewed pre-holiday demand. Evergreen’s central near-term message is that the peak-season effect has lasted longer than expected, with bookings supporting optimism through November.

Wu said the rapid development of artificial intelligence was generating substantial cargo demand. Based on the company’s internal booking position, he characterized capacity utilization through November as very optimistic. Evergreen expects overall fourth-quarter performance to improve compared with the same period last year. It also described conditions in the U.S. end market as relatively optimistic.

According to the company, this year’s spot freight prices have been notably higher than the long-term contract prices negotiated in the fourth quarter of last year. The distinction matters because spot prices reflect prevailing market conditions, whereas contract rates are set through negotiations for longer periods. The company did not present the comparison as a forecast of how rates will develop in subsequent quarters.

Evergreen also discussed the relationship between shipment volumes, operating costs, and revenue. Higher cargo volumes can increase costs, but they can also generate additional revenue. The company said it had observed average freight charges moving higher while fuel cost per ton declined. It presented those observations as reference points for assessing possible future conditions, rather than as a definitive prediction.

Looking ahead to next year, Evergreen acknowledged that the shipping market would remain in a structural state of oversupply. At the same time, it said the active charter market indicated that vessel space was still difficult to secure. Large ships are either owned or chartered on a regular basis, the company said, making it challenging to find additional vessels. This points to a market in which overall supply concerns can coexist with practical limits on available capacity.

The company argued that shipping capacity cannot simply be reproduced when a voyage is missed: if a sailing does not operate, that transport opportunity is lost. Evergreen also cited port congestion and climate change as structural factors affecting operations. In its view, these considerations mean that the outlook for the next two years is not necessarily pessimistic, despite the expected oversupply structure. The company’s assessment combines confidence in near-term demand with recognition that market conditions and operational constraints remain uncertain.
