Xiaomi, traditionally known for its smartphones, has disrupted the automotive industry by surpassing Tesla to become the leading electric vehicle seller in China this January. The Xiaomi YU7 SUV, introduced about six months ago, achieved first place in monthly sales with 37,869 units, significantly outperforming Tesla’s 16,845 Model Y sales as reported by the China Passenger Car Association.

The Model Y, previously the December bestseller, fell dramatically to the 20th spot by January, also slipping from the first rank in new energy vehicles to seventh.
