  • What is causing the current shortage in glass fiber cloth?
  • How is Taiwan Glass Company responding to this market demand?

Main Topic

As artificial intelligence (AI) power continues to increase, the printed circuit board (PCB) industry is experiencing a positive outlook. A leading PCB manufacturer recently indicated that the essential supply chain material, "Low-CTE glass fiber cloth," may remain in short supply until the second half of next year. This shortage has put pressure on upstream suppliers of glass fiber cloth. Encouraged by this scenario, Taiwan Glass (1802-TW) saw its shares open low but rise swiftly to hit a trading limit. The company's stock temporarily closed at 29.3 New Taiwan dollars, with Chairman Lin Po-feng at the helm.

The robust demand for AI has propelled Taiwan Glass higher as it gains traction from its involvement in the glass fiber cloth sphere. Despite major foreign investors selling 12,000 shares previously, today's trading opened lower but rapidly increased in volume. Taiwan Glass reached its price ceiling, with intraday transactions exceeding 168,000 shares, surpassing the previous day's 114,000 shares, ranking second in trading volume among individual stocks. Additionally, the stock price rose above all moving averages, achieving a new local high.

Investing 2.25 billion New Taiwan dollars this year, Taiwan Glass is expanding its Low DK (low-dielectric glass fiber cloth) production lines from 8 to 12, with an estimated payoff period of 3.6 years. The company reports that its first and second-generation Low DK glass fiber cloth, along with Low CTE glass fiber cloth, have been adopted by various clients. These products are continuously used in high-end AI servers, automotive devices, graphics cards, and military products.

Analysts note that glass fiber cloth provides excellent insulation for PCBs. The Low-CTE variant is a critical component of ABF substrates, ensuring that high-end AI chips operate reliably under high-speed computations. Current supply constraints, largely due to a Japanese supplier's global monopoly on technology and capacity, have pressurized major substrate manufacturers, suggesting that Taiwan Glass could continue to attract attention for its offerings. However, it is essential to monitor that the current favorable conditions have yet to noticeably reflect in revenue or profit contributions.
